Major Volcanoes of Guatemala

Acatenango is one of Guatemala’s most famous volcanoes, standing tall near the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala. It’s located in the department of Chimaltenango and is part of the Sierra Madre mountain range. The volcano sits just next to the still-active Fuego volcano, offering hikers breathtaking views of volcanic eruptions during their trek.

Acatenango Elevation – How High Is It?

Acatenango rises to an impressive 3,976 meters (13,045 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest volcanoes in Central America. Its significant elevation presents both an exciting challenge and a stunning panoramic reward for adventurous hikers. Compared to its neighbour, Fuego, Acatenango is taller and inactive, providing a safer hiking experience.

Is Acatenango Active?

Unlike Fuego, which is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, Acatenango is currently dormant. Its last major eruption occurred over a century ago, but it still shows signs of volcanic activity through fumaroles and steam vents near the summit. This dormancy means it’s safe for hiking, but it’s always important to stay updated on volcanic activity before your trip.

Can Acatenango Erupt Again?

While Acatenango is considered dormant, geologists agree that it could erupt again in the future. Volcanic activity is unpredictable, so visitors should always heed local advice and warnings. Fortunately, the nearby active Fuego volcano offers plenty of spectacular eruptions to witness without the risk of Acatenango suddenly becoming dangerous.
